What is a PRISMA flow diagram?

A PRISMA flow diagram shows how records moved through a systematic review: how many were identified, screened, excluded and finally included. The PRISMA 2020 statement recommends it for every systematic review, and journals routinely ask for it.

This generator follows the PRISMA 2020 template for new systematic reviews that searched databases and registers. It works out records screened, reports sought and reports assessed from your numbers and warns you if the totals do not add up, a common reason for reviewer queries.

PRISMA Flow Diagram Generator: FAQ

What is the difference between studies and reports in PRISMA 2020?

A study can be described in more than one report (for example a trial with a protocol and two papers). PRISMA 2020 asks you to count both the studies included and the reports of those studies.

Can I use this for a scoping review?

Yes. Change the title to PRISMA-ScR flow diagram. The same flow applies, and you report it alongside the PRISMA-ScR checklist.

Which file format should I submit to a journal?

SVG is a vector format that stays sharp at any size. The PNG is exported at high resolution for slides and posters.

Is the PRISMA flow diagram generator free?

Yes, it is free with no account, and your numbers stay in your browser.
