How to Use the Reference Deduplication Tool

  1. 1

    Upload your exports

RIS from Ovid, Embase, Scopus or EBSCO; .nbib from PubMed; BibTeX.

  2. 2

    Review the duplicates

See which records were matched and why.

  3. 3

    Download the unique records

Import the RIS file into your screening software.

How duplicates are found

Searching several databases retrieves the same article more than once. Duplicates must be removed before screening, and the number removed is reported in the PRISMA flow diagram.

This tool matches records by DOI, then PubMed ID, then normalised title with the publication year (and first page when available), and keeps the most complete version of each record.

Files are processed entirely in your browser.

Reference Deduplication Tool: FAQ

Will it remove every duplicate?

It removes clear matches. Records with different titles and no shared identifiers (for example conference abstracts and later articles) can remain, so watch for them during screening.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Files are read and processed in your browser.
